Seattle Neighborhood Guide: Northeast Seattle

Northeast Seattle is being transformed by the Link light rail station openings at the University of Washington, U-District, Roosevelt, and Northgate. For a long time, urban density planning was relegated to South Seattle and the areas that used to follow the discriminatory redlining areas of the more diverse neighborhoods. However, in later years there has been a considerable amount of effort to increase density in and around these stations here in North Seattle. Which is good for all of Seattle.

Northeast Seattle runs from the Montlake Cut in the south up through the U District and all the way north to the border of Shoreline at 145th. On the west, the neighborhood boundary is I-5. To the east, the boundary is Lake Washington.

Transit

The Link Light Rail stations opening up at Northgate and Roosevelt have been a total game changer for the area. Before, we were all dependent on the 70s bus lines, which were great. But having easy access to go from Northgate all the way to SeaTac International Airport and eventually to the eastside really changes so much for neighbors here.

Schools in North Seattle

Seattle has a lot of very dedicated school teachers and folx who are trying to make a difference in our community. North Seattle is known for its extremely well-funded PTAs, which have a huge impact on local schools. But once again, go beyond the school rating system and really get to know the specific school. I cannot emphasize this enough. Get involved in your local schools to help create equitable learning opportunities throughout the district.

Let’s chat about North Seattle real estate. Overall you will find a really good mix of housing styles up here. Everything from grand Craftsmans near the U-District, to mid-century view homes in Wedgwood. You also have pockets of condo developments that follow the light rail stations.
