Interview with Major Scales From “Scott Shoemaker’s War on Christmas!”
What should your audience expect at “Scott Shoemaker’s War on Christmas!”?
Major Scales: This year’s War On Christmas has Scott trying to celebrate Christmas with his usual gang of friends, while secretly hiding his depression over not getting the presents he wanted. However, their outrageous forms of celebrating the season force him on a worldwide search for anyone more gloomy than he is at Christmas. On the way, we see creepy dolls, inappropriate nativity scenes, prank phone calls, and many of your favorite (and lesser known) holiday characters, all through a queer and more-than-slightly sarcastic perspective.
What is your role in the show?
Major Scales: I play my stage persona Major Scales; in this show, he’s a fatherly sort of figure who may just also be the next Dexter. Think Ward Cleaver meets American Psycho.
What has it been like preparing for the show?
Major Scales: This show has been a blast to put together. It helps that I’ve worked with most of the cast before (lots of alumni from Beware the Terror of Gaylord Manor here), and it’s just way too funny. We’ve had to pause rehearsals to get through laughing fits! That’s been the biggest challenge, frankly. But each of us gets our own song/dance number as well, and I’ve been practicing my spins so I don’t fall on the audience.
How is “Scott Shoemaker’s War on Christmas!” different from other holiday offerings in Seattle?
Major Scales: This show has a completely different sense of humor from any other holiday show going on in Seattle. You aren’t getting a saccharine Christmas here, more like sacrilege, in the best way. It’s very queer, very camp, and the jokes are on just the right side of the dark. If you need a break from sugary sweet holiday fare, this is the show to see.
What is your favorite part of the show?
Major Scales: It might be playing a lecherous Ebeneezer Scrooge, or singing a classic choral song condemning poor Rudolph with the red nose. Or: Little Miss No Name, the doll who doesn’t even have a name. You’ll have to see the show to believe it!
Who will love the show?
Major Scales: Anyone with a little bent sense of humor, anyone who is done with The Nutcracker. Even my parents loved this show, so if you’re intrigued, join us this Christmas!
