Today I am in a micro-neighborhood in Seattle’s Central District at 23rd and Jackson. We just listed an amazing condo that is in the heart of this neighborhood, and we thought it would be great to give you a tour of a few of our favorite places in the area. The corner of 23rd and Jackson has long been a hub of the historic Black neighborhood in Seattle also known as the Central District. In recent years, there has been a lot of gentrification to the neighborhood with the likes of Amazon moving in one of their stores. Thankfully, many of our favorite Black-owned businesses are still going strong.

Luckily for you, we also have done a deep dive into this awesome neighborhood:

It will give you a ton of insights into the types of homes and the historic nature of this amazing area of Seattle.

The Historic Nature of This Neighborhood

The Central District is the historic Black neighborhood in Seattle. This is both by design and by redlining. There is so much history in just the few blocks in and around 23rd and Jackson. Take a weekend day, enjoy the local shops and restaurants, and soak up the history in this neighborhood.

Start at the William Grose Center For Innovation. William Grose was an amazing entrepreneur in the late 1800s here in Seattle. He helped to develop the Central District for Black families right here in Seattle at the turn of the century. Then head over to the Catholic Community Center’s garden of remembrance for those who have died from police violence. Next, head to the corner of 23rd and Jackson where the old Starbucks used to be. There is a tribute to the historic Jazz community that used to exist in this area during Prohibition and all the way up through the 1950s.

There is so much history in this neighborhood. Check out the two links below and get educated!

A Few Of Our Favorite Shops in the 23rd and Jackson Neighborhood

You all know how much we love small businesses in Seattle. Right now, locally owned businesses are at risk in Seattle. It is super important that we all show up for these producers and contributors to our city. Luckily for all of us, there are several amazing spots right at the corner of 23rd and Jackson. Here are a few of the spots we love to shop:

Kim and I love this neighborhood. You will often find us having a cocktail and a nibble at Reckless Noodles or grabbing lunch at Seattle Fish Guys. On the way home we will get takeout from Med Mix Jackson. And if you want a real treat, go to Simply Soulful. The owners are so sweet and make you feel like family. We love them!!!

Unfortunately we just learned that Catfish Corner has closed. The combination of gentrification and the increasing minimum wage has had a huge impact on businesses like Catfish Corner and other Black-owned businesses. It is heartbreaking. Hence, all the more reason to go and check out the following locally owned businesses at 23rd and Jackson.

Our Favorite Condo Building in This Neighborhood

One of our favorite condo buildings in Seattle is right at the corner of 23rd and Jackson. Seattle is in the middle of a condo crisis. Many buildings are uninsurable, have high homeowners dues, and unfortunately, the high interest rates have also impacted overall values for condos in Seattle. Thankfully the Welch Plaza is in great shape. It has over $800,000 in reserves, they keep up on the maintenance, the building has insurance, and you can easily get a 3% downpayment loan for this building. Not only is the building in great condition and financial shape, but it is also one of the best laid out units in Seattle.

Our newest listing in the Welch Plaza has a fabulous two-bedroom, two-bath condo layout where the bedrooms are separated by the living space. The windows in the unit are huge which allows for a ton of light, fabulous views of Seattle, and makes the space feel really lovely.
