Most folks who know me know how much I love a stunning Seattle Mid-Century Modern Home. In fact, I am a bit of an expert on this style of home for a couple of reasons. I own two Mid-Century homes myself, and I’ve listed over a hundred of these homes over the years.

Team Diva just listed this custom 1976-built MCM split-level home, and I am truly in love. I have a special affinity for this style of home because our home growing up was a 1960s California split level (not in California, though—in New Jersey. Go figure!). And we had a ton of fun growing up in that home!

My Five Favorite Features of This Seattle Mid-Century Modern Home

This Seattle Mid-Century Modern Home in Matthews Beach showcases some of the much-loved characteristics that give MCMs their hallmark character. There are five stellar MCM features that this home has that really make it shine. Here are my favorite things about this home:

Vaulted Ceilings

The main floor vaulted ceilings are so characteristic of MCM homes. These high ceilings make the home feel bright, airy, and open even on a gloomy day. The soaring ceilings really give this home a grand vibe. Plus, they offer tons of wall space for you to show off your amazing art!

This Seattle Mid-Century Modern Home Has Tons of Big Windows

Along with the high ceilings are the huge windows throughout this home. This is a key MCM feature. Big windows help to bring the outside inside, which is a specific design element of most Mid-Century homes. Since this home is positioned in gorgeous Matthews Beach with Lake Washington views, this means you are bringing in the beautiful shimmering blue water of the lake and the greenery that is all around you in this woodsy location.

Stunning Primary Suite

People don’t often think of gracious primary suites as a design feature of MCM homes. And in most it is not. BUT you will find this feature more common in 1970s split-levels like this one. I remember my parents’ room growing up was larger than most NYC apartments. And this one is no different.

The stunning primary bedroom is so spacious there is room for a king-sized bed and for a sofa sitting area. Then the sellers did some magical wall moving to redesign the space so now you have this luxurious remodeled bathroom with a shower that fits 4 instead of one. There is also a large walk-in closet/dressing area. Talk about luxury. Who doesn’t love a walk-in closet?! And, of course, there is also this huge picture window with a view of the beautiful green backyard.

The Double Fireplace

I always love a home with a fireplace both upstairs and downstairs. Why not enjoy a roaring fire while you are hosting a fabulous dinner party upstairs AND while you are downstairs playing games or watching a scary movie with your friends? This is a very distinctive MCM home feature since it really wasn’t until the ‘50s that the daylight basement made a showing. I particularly love the basement fireplace in this home with its mixed stone elements. It is super grand and pretty unique.

The Rec Room

And of course, the best part of having a cool basement fireplace is having a cool basement rec room in which to enjoy it. The rec room in this home is super rad. I love the duality of the chic original parquet floors and the cozy carpeted area. You get one space for chilling by the fireplace and the other for lounging and playing games. This rec room also provides easy access to the in-ground pool and expansive backyard.
