University District

Not surprisingly, the neighborhood that surrounds the University of Washington is densely packed with retail, dining, theaters, and bookstores. Of course there are many apartments here as well, most of which are occupied by students and young professionals. There are plenty of opportunities to enjoy a variety of cultural experiences at the University itself, too. Visit The Henry Art Gallery, The Burke Museum, or the UW World Series at Meany Hall, for example. All of this rests alongside a lively nightlife scene, including lots of live music. The U District is also one of the best places in Seattle to see independent films. Check out the historic Seven Gables Theatre, the centrally located Varsity Theatre, and Sundance Cinemas.

Need retail therapy? University Village is one of the city’s most popular shopping destinations. This open air mall features everything from hip boutiques to furniture stores, and of course plenty of restaurants and bistros. University Avenue (referred to as “The Ave” by locals) features many eateries, including some of the best Thai food in the city. Transit to other neighborhoods and the Eastside is just one bus ride away from the central bus hub, too. Thanks to the University District Light Rail station, it’s easier than ever to get to and from downtown (and the SeaTac International Airport).
