Making the decision to sell your home (probably your biggest investment) is not to be taken lightly. Before making the leap, here are a few questions you should consider. 1. Is your current home satisfying most of your living needs? This is probably the most important question to ask yourself and your family. Between job transitions, births, graduations, and just general changes in how we live, our home needs can fluctuate drastically in a few years. Are you struggling with finding space for your growing family? Do you find that you have whole rooms in your home devoted to just the cat? Have you acquired a love of BBQing but live in a condo? Has your new job added an hour to your commute time? Have you wanted to sledgehammer open a wall just to feel less claustrophobic? If you no longer “love it,” then it may be time to “list… Read More »

As many of you know, we (in this case, Kim & Chavi) remodeled our 1960’s custom built rambler in 2007. The experience was fun, creative, slightly stressful, and very dirty. We enjoyed learning about the diversity of materials out there that are not only beautiful, but also environmentally sound. Below are some helpful hints and resources that we discovered during our own remodeling journey. Hopefully they will make your journey more fun and less stressful. Create your vision: Let your creativity flow and get beyond the beige. A well thought out vision will allow you to give your house a new spark and help save the earth at the same time. It will keep you on track and on budget, from the material selection process to communicating clearly with contractors. Price it out: Our biggest mistake was setting the budget before we knew the cost of materials like tile, countertops,… Read More »
The Divas absolutely love how creative the built green home market has become. There are a multitude of wonderful non-traditional products out there to choose from. The Eco Haus is a great place to start, but many home remodeling stores now provide some types of eco-friendly products. Below is a quick list of the materials we investigated during our remodel back in 2007. Cabinets: We decided to use Canyon Creek. They are not 100% green but they were affordable, locally built, certified by the EPA for healthy air practices, and just plain beautiful. Plus, Marella, their rep will come out and work with you on designing your kitchen, for no extra charge! Tile: We found a great product at both Eco Haus & Norberry Tile in the Seattle Design Center called Fireclay. It is a traditional clay material that is mixed with recycled materials like glass and other products. We… Read More »
The Divas know finding the perfect contractor for your renovation is not an easy task. Good contractors are hard to find for a reason, but nothing makes or breaks your remodel experience like a contractor. Here is our list of ways to ensure you pick the right contractor for you. We LOVED our contractors. The only problem is that the good ones are always booked well in advance. Below are some hints and tricks on how to have an effective working relationship with your contractor. Book Early: Plan on booking someone months before you are ready to go. We booked ours in January and they started in May. Get Referrals: Get as many personal referrals as possible. Ask those folks questions about the work and the process. Was their contractor on time? Did he/she stay in budget? Were they clean? Make sure they really loved their contractor. You will be… Read More »
Team Diva believes that green construction is not merely a luxury available to a select few. Everyone deserves a safe and sustainable home. A house built with substandard materials can be toxic, both literally and figuratively, harming its residents with hazardous materials and depressing its neighborhood with poor design. Beyond this, poor building practices deplete more resources and create more waste, creating negative effects far and wide. Luckily we live in Seattle, where sustainable construction has long been encouraged by the city and creative folks have set the bar high for others. For as long as Team Diva can remember, Seattle has been pro-green. After a little research, even we were amazed by how much the local government has done to promote green building practices in Seattle. The City of Seattle gave early incentives to developers for better site planning, responsible water usage, and green multi-family developments. Ever wonder why… Read More »
