GET TO KNOW Edmonds
A 15-minute drive north of Seattle puts you in the picturesque city of Edmonds. Its charming and walkable downtown attracts weekend visitors who want to get off the beaten path, or who are stopping by before taking the ferry across the Puget Sound to Kingston. Edmonds prides itself on its slower pace, sense of history and gorgeous views. Its sandy beaches come alive in the summer, and in cooler months the historic downtown streets twinkle with light, encouraging one to stroll to a favorite cafe or diner. There are ample parks, including off-leash dog areas and a marshland park near the center of town that you can traverse on boardwalks. Every Third Thursday there is an art walk downtown, too, which reflects a larger commitment by the city to make art and literature a part of the city's identity through public works and programs. If you commute to or regularly visit downtown Seattle, you don't actually need to make the drive either. The Sounder Train runs from downtown Edmonds right to Pioneer Square. Edmonds is a perfect place for young families who want access to a larger city but want their daily lives to be part of a smaller, tight community.
